Dr. Alex Yufik received his education on the east coast. He completed a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in the study of psychology at the University of Massachusetts, at Amherst graduating after three years with honors as a Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude. Dr. Yufik proceeded to obtain his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree at the Villanova University School of Law in Pennsylvania. During this time, Dr. Yufik represented juvenile defendants at the Philadelphia Public Defender’s Office and volunteered at the Women Against Abuse Legal Project, where he helped battered and abused women obtain restraining orders and counseling services. He then began his legal practice as a criminal defense attorney with Barry Helfand & Associates, one of the most prestigious firms in Maryland. There, he worked on a number of very high profile cases, including the Ruthann Aron case (to read more about this case click here) and the Garrett Wilson SIDS murder case. (You can read more about this case from Court TV Crime Library by clicking here.)

While practicing law, Dr. Yufik completed his Doctor of Psychology degree (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology from George Washington University, in Washington D.C. He also held externships at the District of Columbia Superior Court Child Guidance Clinic and at the Springfield Hospital Center, a locked forensic treatment unit. He has taught numerous courses as an adjunct professor at California State University of Los Angeles in the Criminal Justice Department and the School of Social Work.  He is credentialed by the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, which is an indication of professional competence beyond the threshold qualifications of state licensure. He is also a panelist on the California Forensic Assessment Project, and conducts forensic evaluations for the California Conditional Release Program. Dr. Yufik also serves as an expert for the California Board of Psychology, and provides expert evaluations of cases in which psychologists have been accused of unprofessional conduct.

Dr. Yufik focuses in providing individual treatment to patients in his private practice, and utilizes the latest diagnostic psychological and neuropsychological testing.  After his years of ongoing study and practice, he specializes in both psychodynamic psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral techniques. Psychodynamic therapy examines the personality at depth, considering how interpersonal patterns learned in the past may limit the individual's present life experience. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) uses systematic, goal-oriented techniques to restructure the client’s unwanted habits of thinking, feeling and doing. Dr. Yufik regularly works with clients struggling with a broad range of emotional difficulties, including depression, anxiety, panic attacks, drug and alcohol problems, stress, anger problems, PTSD, career difficulties and relationship problems. Licensed Professionals

If you are a licensed professional and have been charged with a criminal offense, the charges can often lead to professional misconduct proceedings. This is especially true if there is an issue of:

  • substance abuse

  • chemical dependency

  • violations in standard of care or

  • sexual boundary violations

The ramifications of an arrest and indictment alone are severe. However, the consequences of a criminal conviction for a licensed health care professional can often be devastating. For these reasons it is imperative that legal counsel is obtained as soon as there is any indication that criminal charges may be filed against you or your organization. Without representation you will be at a loss and may surrender rights which you otherwise might not have known existed.

Criminal law and the multitude of issues which surround an arrest, indictment, trial conviction, plea agreement, probation, jail time or a final conviction weigh heavily upon an administrative agency’s decision to pursue misconduct charges. In many cases the decision is directed by statute and the misconduct, suspension or revocation proceedings following a criminal conviction are required as a matter of law.

Therefore, when a licensed professional is facing criminal charges it is imperative that they hire a lawyer who is familiar with criminal practice and procedure as well as the repercussions that a given plea agreement or even a trial could have on their license. In many instances certain convictions, whether for deferred adjudication or straight community supervision, will require a mandatory suspension or revocation of the licensee’s license. Some agencies require, upon a conviction for specific offenses, that the license is to be revoked unless the licensee can make a showing that it is in the best interest of society as well as the licensee that they maintain the license. For obvious reasons, it is imperative that a licensee charged with a state or federal offense seek professional counsel to assist in decision making and explain the ramifications a charge or plea agreement may have upon licensure renewal, application or the filing of misconduct charges. In such a case, a licensed professional needs to obtain immediate criminal representation to assist in the pretrial planning and proactive strategies that should accompany an arrest or indictment.

After being arrested for a DUI, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Domestic Abuse, Allegations of Fraud or Drug Diversion, professionals often engage in denial and problem avoidance. This is often the worst approach that a licensed professional can make as valuable time is wasted which should be utilized preparing a defense or assembling and developing mitigation evidence.

My office is especially devoted to representing both the criminal and administrative needs of physicians and other licensed professionals. We provide criminal representation with an understanding of the licensee’s professional needs. Moreover, because we represent clients with the entirety of their professional practice in mind, we can provide sound advice, advocacy and a strong criminal defense without losing sight of your desire to continue working in your chosen profession. Furthermore, because I am a psychologist in addition to being a lawyer, I uniquely understand your problems and can provide a comprehensive strategy aimed at saving your career and possibly your life.
