Federal Public Defender, District of Arizona
Mission Statement
The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Arizona was created in 1966 by the Criminal Justice Act of 1964 (18 U.S.C. Section 3006).
The mission of the Federal Public Defender's Office is to ensure that the right to counsel, guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment and the Criminal Justice Act, is enforced on behalf of those who cannot afford counsel and requisite defense services.
By fulfilling its mission, the Office (a) fosters public confidence in the nation's commitment to equal justice under law, and (b) effects the constitutionality-mandated adversary system of justice by which both federal criminal laws and federally guaranteed rights are enforced.
The Federal Public Defender is appointed to a four-year term by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The Federal Public Defender appoints as many attorneys as the U.S. Court of Appeals approves and other personnel as approved by the Director of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.
